KMIH takes 3rd Place at Wa. State Radio Awards

Students in the Radio Broadcasting program at Mercer Island High School attended the 6th Annual Washington State High School Radio Awards on Thursday, May 17, 2013.

Mercer Island High School was one of the seven high school radio stations in the state of Washington who attended the 6th Annual Washington State High School Radio Awards. Nathan Hale High School’s C89.5 FM hosted the event on Thursday, May 17, 2013. Students attended a keynote from Pat Cashman, a local radio and TV personality from shows like Almost Live and Bill Nye the Science Guy and then had the opportunity to meet various industry professionals to learn more about their trade in voice work, sales, public affairs, and news.

MIHS students took home 6 awards. Luke Mounger took 1st place for Best Sports Play-By-Play. Brady Baker along with Luke Monuger took 2nd place for Best Sports Feature. Cameron Smith took 2nd place and Tom Rall and Ian Caldwell took 3rd place for Best Imaging Pieces. MIHS students took 3rd place overall in the competition.

Students spent the year creating various audio samples in the categories of news, jock-talk, sports, public service announcements, underwriting, and station imaging.  These pieces were submitted in April and were judged by local radio professionals here in Seattle.

Radio broadcasting teacher and KMIH station manager Charlie Hilen was pleased with the results of the competition. “The students put in a lot of hard work this year and I am happy to see their efforts have been recognized. The bar has been set even higher for next year and I know they will continue to grow as the program gets stronger,” said Hilen.
